George V & VI post boxes
George V & VI post boxes
The main post box thread is for Victoria models, so this one is as per heading and one suspects there may be quite afew scattered about.
This one is a G VI box located in Hazlewick Road, Three Bridges.
It sits adj to the old CO-OP store which is now a family run furniture outlet and locksmiths.
The originally the shop built in approx.1936 was a CO-OP with a PO, so the guess the PO Box is an early fitted version during the Kings reign.
Maker is WT Allen & co.

Re: George V & VI post boxes
The G VI boxes have a small VI inscribed in between the G&R.
Re: George V & VI post boxes
George 4th was king before we had post boxes ........ I think.
Therefore meant that George 5th only had a GR on his post boxes.
George 6th then had to have a new cipher on them.
I think I'm correct in this.

Re: George V & VI post boxes
The style of the cipher on both very different GR (V) very plain as opposed to the flourish of the VI.

I wonder what that will look like? I hope it won't be a monstrous carbuncle!
Re: George V & VI post boxes
Got a few of them GR boxes round here, two within a short walk of me, living in 'Sarfend' Essex ,somewhere in town is an Eddy Vll box ,a rarity indeed , and one or 2 Vicky's as well, my neck of the urban jungle is 1912, so GR V.
Being An Ex postie I ought to know about the Eddy Vll, will need to find out.
But No chavvy Chas. Ones yet!

Re: George V & VI post boxes
Taken from https://historicengland.org.uk/images-b ... ost-boxes/More than 60% of current British post boxes carry the EIIR mark of Queen Elizabeth II or a Scottish crown. Boxes from the reign of George V account for about 15% of the total. There are smaller numbers, in descending order, of boxes from the reigns of George VI, Victoria, and Edward VII. The Letter Box Study Group has identified 171 boxes surviving from the short 1936 reign of Edward VIII.

Do they use the Scottish version on post boxes in Scotland?
Thanks
