Queen Victoria Postboxes
Re: Queen Victoria Postboxes
I will have to take a pic some time of the GR wall mounted one in a local village, past it many times without taking much notice. It is a quite a large wall mount box.

This rather shabby one from today's ride is in Cawton NW of Malton. Couldn't make out the foundry name.

Visited Iona today and there was a hexangonal (Penfold?) VR post on this island. In remarkable conditon too given the harsh weather it has to endure

I had meant to include this photo earlier, as it's one I took in November. I was cycling up Ulcombe Hill, in Kent and noticed a post box built into the wall. Looking closer, I realised it was a Victorian post box- another photo for the forum.

A new year and new post boxes to discover. This one from today's ride at Ganthorpe on western edge of Yorkshire Arboretum.

Interesting one today on backroad from Otley to Ilkley.
Perhaps even more interesting, and certainly rarer:
Now more used by elderly cyclists having a rest from suffering on the infernal hills of Yorkshire (to be fair, my brother in law was only pretending to be done in, honest)

Slightly off-topic, but there's a cabbie's shelter in Hitchin town centre. Was originally at the station:

Re: Queen Victoria Postboxes
I expect it's not used by cabbies anymore, as they tend to sit in their cabs, so what is it used for? It would be a shame for such a wonderful structure not to have a use.
Re: Queen Victoria Postboxes
Thanks for that.
It's rather topical. The head of the Royal Mail has just been recalled and placed under oath by the Select Committee following some misleading statements about the working conditions of postpeople.
See also delivery drivers.

Also it's in the wrong place, as there is no cab rank at its new home in the Market Square
Last time I saw it opened, it contained chairs and tables used by the various events and stalls that are held in the Square. Bit of a come-down I suppose, being a glorified shed. But a nice piece of history.
Re: Queen Victoria Postboxes
Now, that one I have used for its intended purpose. It was also at one time used by cabbies, I think it might even have been built for them. If not for them then perhaps for the convalescing WWI soldiers, for whom the nearby shelter was built.

The urinal has been closed for several years now due to 'misuse' but the more recent, less ornate but more storied one nearby on the Downs, just next to the water tower, is still open.

It's a long time since I used that one too. I used to cycle up from Bridgwater occasionally to have a violin bow rehaired by Stags the bowman on Xmas steps. I often came up over the bridge, past the Zoo before dropping down to my destination. It was a convenient stopover.
