Gijon to Poole Ferry

Post by spicerack »

I'm planing a trip around Northern Spain in September and looking for transport options to and from Spain. It looks like LD Lines are starting a new ferry service from Gijón to Poole which would be a great departure point after Leon. The website is very vague, does anyone know more?

It'd be sceptical at the moment, they seem to have been talking about it for a while.

Maybe give them or sister company DFDS a call?

It's a lovely area to cycle though as I'm sure you know. I've done several trips using the Santander ferry.

Could the CTC lobby them to accept cyclists?

So I guess this in a not a new service then?

Could the CTC lobby them to accept cyclists?

Good idea, it frustrates me when they don't take bikes.

Good to hear, I'm quite excited.

I'll give them a call and see what the latest news is.

So I called LD Lines, got through after being on hold for 20 minutes a very unhelpful lady who couldn't get me off the phone fast enough informed me they don't accept bicycles because of 'licensing'. I wonder if a CTC campaign might be able to change these license rules?

'Licensing'. I think she made that bit up. LD Lines are not with it in my opinion, and I live in Poole. I'd ride to Pompey instead using Brittany.

None of this makes sense to me. I took the LD Lines ferry from Poole to Gijon in April of this year with my bicycle. The booking ws quite straightforward online with 'Bicycle' listed as a drop-down option under transport used.

Very weird considering what the lady on the phone said. I tried to check again using the website but now it says that there is no availability. Anyway, we've already booked flights to Asturias for the way out and getting the Santander ferry back. Ferry both ways would have been nicer and better for my airport baggage handler paranoia, but flying out seemed the easiest option in the end.
