Sweat Rash!

Postby Madra » Sat Oct 09, 2004 7:38 pm

This is a bit embarrasing but when I cycle for long periods I sometimes get a sweat rash in my groin which is very uncomfortable. Does anyone else have the same problem and, if so, what do you use to correct the problem?

Sudocrem.

Apply liberally before riding.

I've never suffered at in this department . . . . until last month when in trying to show local cyclist the boroughs cycle network I didn't wear cycling shorts. Fifteen miles later, right groin three by half inch raw patch, seeping for a week. I'll never not wear an appropriately cut garment again!!

So are you wearing a suitably designed pair of short, be they lycra or more non cycling like. Its the seems and doubling of materials which do the cutting and chaffing. Finally just to be really sure I have no compulsions to descretely man handling my short into place to ensure they fit be deeply into the geoin os as to avoid no skin to skin contact, I mean whats wrong with doing the Sumo wide leg stance to avoid chaffed nads?

Good luck, chaff free riding

Thanks for the advice. Yes, I wear the right clothing. This time of the year I usually wear my bib tights and cycling underwear. Both garments have chamoise pads. Although I must admit to feeling a bit bulky down below sometimes (aren't I the lucky one!) The rash occurs just at the top inside leg and the crease of the groin. I've now purchased Sudocrem and I'm hoping this will do the trick!!

2 sets of padding may be the problem: you really /can/ have too much of a good thing, with an excessive level of padding actually increasing the likliehood of chafing, plus also the amount of sweat down there. If the bib already has a pad in it try just using that with no underwear at all and see if that makes a difference.

Removing one layer of padding worked for me. 6049.9 miles so far this year with never a complaint from the tender regions.

Will removing the extra padding really work? The solution seems very simplistic to me! Clearly, I will take your advice and let you know what happens. I'm very grateful for all your contributions! Kindest regards!

I suffered this after riding with a pair of ordinary shorts ontop of cycling shorts, they rode into the crotch and I had a bad time for weeks,a visit to my GP and a script for Daktacort ointment did the trick in days.Sudacrem and other wonder creams did no good at getting rid, though I do use Sudo on a regular basis(250 miles a week)I didnt on this occasion!!

Thanks Rocko! What were your symptoms and how bad did you get the rash? I'm using Canesten with 1% Hydrocortisone, which is not working too well.

Sorry it tok so long to get back.My symptoms were quite severe , rash/small spots etc (no itch)all round the inside of both thighs at the top including nuts!! I still rode but albeit with discomfort.I hope you have visited your Doc,got the cream on script(or try the chemist, maybe it can be bought without script) and are well cured.

Thanks Rocko! The information you gave me was very useful. I have managed to get rid of the rash by using Canesten with 1% Hydrocortisone. It was really effective and after a week the rash disappeared. I have taken advice and now apply Sudocrem when I'm cycling. In fact I still apply a little Sudocrem every morning before I go to work - just in case! My wife thinks I'm getting a bit paranoid; perhaps I am! Thank you all for your advice.

Oh, by the way. I suspected that the long hairs at the top of the legs weren't helping the situation so I trimmed them. This also had a beneficial effect!
