Panniers

Post by barbelfisher »

Getting a bit twitchy as just over a week for my first tour jaunt, so bear with me folks please. I purchased a set of Lidl look alike ortleib rolltop panniers a while back to use but now wondering if they will stand up to use as the hooks are only plastic. Has anybody used these with good results? or should I replace them as they were only cheap. Would be grateful for any opinions or advice please.

Regards barbelfisher.

I don't know about their panniers but I've bought odd things at Lidl's bike week events and, to be fair, they have always done what it said on the tin, so to speak.

I think I'd give them a go first, but having had some doubts, I'd take something along as a fix just in case. Cable ties?
If it wasn't for cars, there wouldn't be the amount of tarmac that there is.

Hi,
ref the Lidl panniers ; I have used a pair for nearly two years and did my JOGLE last June with a pair and they were fine.
The only problem I ever had with a clip was when I cycled into a gatepost once having forgot how wide I was but I do think any set of panniers wouldnt have liked that.
Having said that I have saved up and gotten a set of Ortlieb this year; but they are kept for best :D .
On the Lidl point ; I did get a workstand for £29:99 last year and that I can thoroughly recommend!

I know from your recent posts that you are planning on doing the Way of the Roses (I nearly posted War  )

You will pass not a million miles from an lbs specialising in touring stuff, with a three letter name, beginning with "S" and ending with "a." Make a note of their details. Then, if any excuse should arise on your ride you will know where to go.

I have just broken the plastic clips on my Carradice pannier bags. I think they are 20odd years old and plastic don't last forever. I am not what you call a heavy user. (Odd trip every now and again) A fairly thick cable tie was all that was needed to fashion an acceptable repair. When the hook failed we did have a bit of a moment!

Can anybody tell me if the hooks/ rail arrangement is compatible with the current hooks for replacement?

Have a look at the vid in "too good to lose" of the mature chap fitting a Marathon tyre. Remember the physog. You may see him out in that area, enjoying a well-earned retirement. He'll be able to point you towards -p- Cycles (I'll leave you to fill in the missing letters to avoid claims of advertising.)

Are these plastic hooks which don't have the extra click-lock security feature but are fitted by sliding along a metal rail? If so, yes, I can confirm that the current hooks are compatible - I replaced my old ones last year.

Also I reckon the new ones should be less prone to breaking as they don't have to flex to fit on the carrier.

I tried Ortlieb QL-1 quick release hooks on my Lidl pannier, and they fit well. In fact the Lidl rail and the QL-1 rail are hard to tell apart. Maybe this is an insight into who makes the pannier? I will measure the profile of the two rails at some point to compare them to see if there is a difference in the contour.
On the subject of Ortlieb, why can't I find a QL-2 rail to purchase?

I have always used lidl or argos cheap panniers and never had a problem .

if my hooks broke I would also use zip-ties or string and remove the contents in the plastic bags that I always use inside.

If been slightly more rigorous, and used a profile gauge on a Lidl & Ortlieb QL-1 pannier rail.
As you can see, they aren't quite the same in the top half, but I don't think it matters much, and the fit could always be made better by smoothing the arris of the Lidl rail, or by applying a hot air gun to the QL-1 hooks? Importantly, the channel part uses the same type of captive nuts, and the channel is the same width in both cases. It costs about £9 to make the change.

Just wondered if you still had the Lidl's panniers to offload...? Tried to send you a PM, but because I only just created my account I'm not currently allowed!

Cheers.

You should now be able to use the PM facility.
