incidentally the lady in the film had a left side front brake, (her only brake). I've not seen that too often, I wonder how common it was? I wonder if the idea was that if you have only one brake you should have it on the left, so that you can still use it whilst signalling?

cheers

Regarding the brake on the left of the bike, I heard that the reason that most bikes have the rear brake on the left in the UK is so that you have more control over the bike when signalling to turn right - the assumption being that the rear brake gives more control. In countries where traffic is on the right hand side of the road, the brakes are the other way round (apparently).

What surprised me about the clip was the shallow angle that she crossed those tram tracks.

Long experience with tramlines, I'd guess.

Looks as if she's on a fixie.
Have we got time for another cuppa?

Evelyn 'Hamilton', did 10,000 miles in 100 days back in the 30s, lived to the ripe old age of 99
She also rode one of the very first recumbants in an old Pathe film

I have the front brake on the left because I feel the front wheel is more under control when braking than the rear - and not only when signalling right. The right arm is the one I use to indicate gratitude (and occasional displeasure) towards fellow road users, which means the left hand is most often near the brake.

Perhaps there's something a bit deeper about it. We pass on the left because it is easier to defend an attack from the right, and we like to have the right arm free to reach for the sword - or a hand to fend off a close pass.
