The Arrow ... my first Sportive. And more events ..

Post by landsurfer »

My first Sportive.....
I had a great ride.
Soaked to the skin and blown all about.
Good company in fits and starts.
I usually ride alone.
Lots of organisation, lots.
Timing, chips on our helmets, signs every where, a feeding station, "free" stuff.
Massage, a burger van.
Hundreds of punctures !
The plastic fantastic brigade love to fit expensive unsuitable tyres.
Hardly a farm gate was passed in the first 24 miles that did not have groups of riders fixing punctures in it..
On my finish a drink, an energy bar and a medal.
Lovely Lincolnshire at its wet best.
48 miles of fun.

£25 !!!

And my last ... at least I gave it a go....

You're kidding, right? :) Get a good night's sleep (you should...) and you'll be raring to go again (not that I would know - you're one step ahead of me - but it sounds like a whole lot of fun)! :D

Anything that gets people riding, but after completing a 420 k AUdax through Snowdonia on Saturday , I do find a medal for riding 48 miles of flat , rather strange. The differences between Audax and Sportives

Audax- cheap , proper food like flap jacks, home made rhubarb crumble with custard often included - Sportifs horrible litter lout gels

Audax - proper distances with proper scenry , find your own way . Sportifs - yellow arrows everywhere on short distances

Audax - Cheap - Sportif - Expensive

Audax - people pretending not to race , Sportif - people pretending to race

AUdax - coffee cake and possibly a bed for the night at the end Sportif - a medal

And reading the replies from the Audax members is enough to explain why they are such a small group within cycling. And probably explains why after 6 years of Audax membership I will not renew. Self opinionated, boring, and insular people.
And they can't read . . What bit of "My first Sportive" are you having problems with ?
Cycling is about having fun . . Something that seems to have been forgotten with in Audax UK.
While you where boring yourself to death on Saturday in Snowdonia I was surfing at Godrevy in Cornwall, followed by a 7 hour drive to Sheffield before a 6am start for my pathetic sportive. That was after my week of cycle touring throughout the west of Cornwall with my wife and grandson.

Were the chips from the burger van?

I've probably written this before but the funniest thing I saw on my first sportive was approaching along a straight towards a group of riders failing to use their new CO2 pump, bathing themselves in a bit of dry ice "smoke" as it bounced around the verge.

And my last ... at least I gave it a go....

So what next for landsurfer?

T**ts !

Not insular enough it seems! Sorry to have poked a raw nerve.

I am not an Audax member either, I just like going out for rides with similarly boring people as myself.
