Good Pannier or Rear Rack for Dawes Discovery?

Post by DanCharles »

Hi, thanks for everyone's help on this forum. Its been extremely helpful.

I'm new to the idea of a 'rear rack' or 'Pannier'. I'm not even sure if that's what they're called. I would like a bag that would fit on the back of my Dawes Discovery. To carry food, kit, etc
I don't have a huge budget so as cheap as possible would be great. My question is can anyone recommend one for me? Thankyou for helping me with my cycling newby-ness anyway.
Much appreciated.

Dan

a pannier rack is a really good thing to add to your bike. I don't know the Dawes Discovery so I will leave advice on rack models to someone who does. Some racks will fit your bike and some won't.

I would suggest a Tortec Expedition rack http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/tortec-e ... 16200.html teamed up with Ortlieb Back Rollers http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/index.ht ... ck&x=0&y=0 .

They both come with 5 years warranty, will fit your Dawes nice and dandy and in my experience will last twice the warranty period! You get what you pay for but this pairing outstrips pretty much all the opposition!
Convention? what's that then?

Foxyrider's rack suggestion sounds good to me, but the panniers, though very well made, may be more expensive than you were hoping for. But they will last and last.

I've got a lovely alloy rear rack for a discovery you can have for a £5 plus post or just promise to donate the same amount to the British Legion, its fitted to my discovery but is surplus to requirements, light , rigid and in good nick ...... and cheap

I have a relatively new Halford Rackpack which proved too floppy for my needs. It's also suffered a gel leak. It sits on the flat bit of the pannier rack. Yours for postage.

Doubt this falls into the "cheap as possible" category.

I bought one of these for my girlfriends bike last year and whilst I don't think it would suit a round the world expedition, it'll happily take the weight you are suggesting.

These panniers seem to get very good reviews although I've not tried them myself.

its cheap if you live in the real world and don't want to buy everything again next year. I'm far from rich but an investment of @ £100 I would consider good value, buy cheap, buy twice!

I'm on ESA. Other than those on JSA or Universal Credit, it doesn't get any more real. *
Buy cheap , buy twice. The word I'm thinking to describe that saying is very much banned on this forum :)

OP, I have a Discovery 501, I've had a 201, 301 and a 401 too, they have taken me across countries and do the weekly food shopping too! I have had umpteen racks but the best, by far, is suggested by "foxyrider", the Tourtec.

They're not bad, but they're not great either. They're a good size for the weekly shop and light. They're also cheap, but to rectify the shortcomings needs some money spent on them.

Basically the rack attachment is pants. It's the old fashioned simple hook type. The hooks are too close together and the backing plate is thin flexible plastic. To get these panniers working well I needed to buy some correx board and some rivets. The board is cut to overlay the existing board. The hooks are removed and re-rivetted through the correx at much wider spacing to give more rigid support.

I then dispensed with the old bungee strap at the base of the bags. I then moved the D ring to the bottom of the bag. A large quick release zip tie then attaches the D ring to the base of the rack. Release the zip ties to remove the bags, otherwise the bags are good for keeping on the bike permanently - little chance of the average scumbag figuring out how to remove them.

The whole thing results in an extremely rigid setup.

Because they are light, they're not the most durable bags. To reduce wear I placed sections of thin karrimor sleeping mat at the bottom of the bags. This really helps when sharp edged objects are placed within.

EDIT: there's pictures of my modification towars the end of this thread viewtopic.php?f=5&t=79714&hilit=sjs+pannier+bags&start=15
