...although I find the "hero" tag ridiculous in these situations, as I'm sure the pilot would agree.

IIRC correctly there was a pilot during WW2 who brought back an aircraft despite severe damage to the aircraft ad multiple wounds

He was nominated for the Victoria Cross for his actions.......


However it was refused because there was an "element of self-preservation"
