Trains do still empty onto the tracks though, they discussed it on the radio a couple of weeks ago, so not sure you'd want to be too close to the tracks. I agree though, alongside railway tracks and canals can be great places for cycle paths, for the reasons mentioned above, level, into town centres, few or no junctions with other vehicles.

Yes, it is a long drawn out effort The surface looks to be the usual shovelled (not flat) finish, and I don't see anything different about the fast lay by entry although the've had a bit of a go at the exit. Personally I'd just cycle along the lay by.... Finally, as you say, it's suggested that one rejoins the carrageway (the quieter one being helpfully marked), but that soon spits you out to deal with a busy roundabout....
