Off The bike for a while

Post by Norman H »

I've just returned from Ireland, a little earlier than intended. The original plan was for two of us to spend a week staying with a friend near Skibereen doing day rides and then to set of for a six or seven day tour of the Beara Peninsular. Unfortunately on a day ride to Mizzen Head we were returning along the Dunmanus shore when I had an off and dislocated my collar bone. The planned tour of the Beara had to be cancelled which was a great shame as the weather in Ireland was fantastic and looked set to continue that way.

A&E at Bantry Hospital were very efficient and I was advised by the doctor on duty to see an orthopaedic specialist when I returned to the UK. I've spent the last couple of days sitting in hospital waiting rooms and the outcome is that they will probably perform a minor operation to correct it next Thursday.

Sorry to hear of your off, wish you a speedy recovery.

Beautiful part of Ireland, holidayed near Skibereen last summer (sans bike).

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your tumble.

I dislocated my collar bone twenty years ago, and nothing was done so I live with it, not a big problem unless I do over head decorations.
Bike riding is ok but I have a stabbing pain in shoulder now and a gain which lasts about a second or two just the once in a ride.
Get it fixed, hope it goes well.

Sorry to hear of your injury. I was there in July. Did a fantastic tour of Ireland starting in Rosslare, down to Mizen Head, up the west coast to Malin Head and finished in Belfast. Get well soon and enjoy Ireland next time.

Thanks to everyone for the messages of support. I can thoroughly recommend the area for cycle touring. It can get busy in July/August but at this time of the year the roads are very quiet.

Sorry to hear about your off, get well and back on the bike soon! I've never cycled in Ireland, one thing I've missed out on :( - but I remember driving around the Ring of Beara many years ago - noted what a lonely desolate area it is (compared to the much more touristy Ring of Kerry). Beara must be a dream for cycling - but very hilly!

Must be the season for off's
I have my first decent one a dew days ago, when a motorbike pulled out on me.

Bike survived well, & apart from a sore knee/elbow the biggest impact was my left side where I landed on the motorbikes handlebars.

I had the operation yesterday and I've just returned home. Isn't anaesthesia wonderful! You fall asleep with a problem and when you wake up it's gone. Well, the egg sized bump on my shoulder has gone.
Doctor says I should be riding my bike again in about four weeks.
