Sri Lanka Commonwealth Cyclists On M74

Post by Thomas125 »

Anyone seen this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cycling/28446017

Even if I didn't know it was illegal I'd feel pretty intimidated. These guys must have no fear :?
Was 93.4kg now 78.3kg

Next target 74.0kg

They were probably just following the special signs for games traffic and the lane on the M74 was probably for athletes and games officials only.

Obviously athletes are not expected to cycle to events.

Motorways don't have the big signs any more.
The ones that stated what was forbidden .... agricultural vehicles, mopeds under 50cc, learner drivers, cyclists, animals, pedestrians, etc etc etc.

If you don't know the UK Highway Code, there's nothing to tell you anything on the entrance to a motorway. The police would have difficulty in prosecuting.

When I was cycling in Spain I found myself on the autopista on more than one occasion. Sometimes it didn't seem to give you any other option!
I feel sure that the genius that did this, didn't even feel a thud as he drove by.

The hard shoulder can easily be mistaken for a cycle lane.

Nah, they have the correct amount of detritus on them but they're just too wide to have been provided for peasants on two wheels

Nothing new the Kenyan cycle team saw on the map a nice straight direct route Manchester - Rivington and used the M61 to ride out and recce the TT and RR circuit in 2002.

Seems to happen every time we host a major event involving cycling. Our road signage must be rubbish!

As I said, they don't have the warning/forbidding signs at the entrances to motorways any more.

They used to be huge information signs, now all there is a small sign announcing the M number.

Yeah, this is what I would have guessed - a lane with no traffic in it and all the cars sticking to the other lanes, very few junctions to hold you up, probably few steep gradients either....seems the ideal place to ride (if you've little or no experience of motorways).

The only clue being that the cycle lane is wide enough.
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

No, but it seemed to happen years ago as well. Not sure the sign changes have made it any worse...

I was long intrigued by that badly worded sign "End of Motorway Regulations". I had looked in the Highway Code, and been unable to find any End of Motorway Regulations. Perhaps only special initiates were allowed to read them.

I have a 1970s(?) Highway Code somewhere, I must dig it out.
