Watching TdF and ... open mouths ... bugs!

Post by Psamathe »

Just been watching the TdF on TV and amazed at seeing them riding along, mouths wide open. And I went for a ride yesterday and every now and again like riding through a shot blasting area, and then you have to wipe all these black bugs of arms/shorts, various orifices, etc.

So how come the TdF riders can happily ride mouths wide open. When I lived in France they had just as many bugs as we have in the UK. Part of the TdF training to swallow numerous bugs without showing emotion ?

They are grateful for the extra protein.

More seriously, if you are in the peleton, the people at the front would have cleared them out of the way for you.

Have you tried riding at 25 mph with your mouth closed.
You'll never know if you don't try it.

How can you tell a happy cyclist?

There's the potential here for a new bit of kit in the form of some sort of net covering a rider's mouth, excluding the insects but allowing normal breathing and talking.

Produce a few hundred and distribute them free to all pro riders, on condition that even when they are not using them, they should be positioned to be prominent in all pics, especially podium ceremonies and interviews. To this end, a bold colour would be an advantage, although pro team colours might also be popular, especially as use spreads to lesser mortals.

Have a larger stock ready when everybody else realises that if all the top riders use them, they must be a vital item for success.

You'll need a catchy name for your product and I offer "Bugger." That's a word on many lips already.

Maybe adding "Off" after your suggestion might make it clearer about the function of the device ?

As a vegetarian I'm grateful for the guilt free source of protein.

The bugs round here seem to be particularly drawn to yellow clothing so Nibali and the Saxo-Tinkoff team will be particularly afflicted :D
