Run Down and Robbed

Post by mrjemm »

I only just noticed this story from the Guardian. Seems it happened in the week, so I don't know if it's been mentioned here, though I've not seen anything-

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/the- ... it-and-run

I think the URL says it all, if you don't want to click on the link. That the article mentions the car having 'foreign' plates, and the people involved having 'Eastern European accents' is a bit of prejudice bait, which surprises me for the Graun.

I think there are a few folk here though who cycle around the Preston area, so perhaps someone knows more about this.

So glad I live in The Peoples Democratic Republic of Islington.

I can understand those northern folk being a bit "off", after all they have a football team named "Preston Northend Nil"

Well seeing as the police were appealing for witnesses, it's not entirely inappropriate to release the description of the perpetrators and their vehicle. Though neither would be exactly notable considering the number of Eastern Europeans living in that area of town. I guess it's standard practice. I was always amazed when they asked for information from anybody who may have seen "a blue Escort" or "a white Ford Transit" :?
Remarkably little about this in the local press, in fact I think the Grauniad got there first. It's a cyclist so probably not a priority

Forriners in a maybe blue hatchback... Not exactly useful, is it? Like the tall dark stranger who does some other nefarious deed.

I had a look around for mentions of it, and all the other refs (LEP, Preston Blog, etc.) that I could find read like a press release, i.e. each one almost a facsimile of the last.

If I remember the article right, it was 11:15pm, so I guess alcohol may well have been involved, or an element of bravery under the camouflage of night, not that it would get very dark around there. Still, vehicular assault is vehicular assault, and damn nasty.

Ribbleton, not one of the 'better' areas to be cycling around at night, either...
