Have just removed more that contain abuse towards other forum users - sorry but if we can't play nice then we ain't going to play at all.
Thus I'm saying that this one has run its course for now....may unlock later when we've calmed down a bit.

The driver has been jailed for 10 years.

Seems very low, don't get the point of concurrent sentencing.
Re: Two cyclists killed, driver arrested
Walters was sentenced to 10 years and three months for dangerous driving and aggravated vehicle taking.
So not sentenced for causing death?
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Two similar charges arising from one episode of offending.

Thinking about it, he should have got that long for the offences without killing anyone.

Re: Two cyclists killed, driver arrested
If there's any involvement of a police vehicle in a serious collision, not necessarily an active pursuit, it's automatically referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for investigation. Although that reference is automatic, it can be interpreted in a "no smoke without fire" manner, as happened in this thread. I've looked on the IPCC website and I can find no reference to this case, although that may be my poor IT skills. . Perhaps the IPCC decided a full investigation was unwarranted, based on the evidence available from the early stages. If so, I think it's a pity that even that limited information seems not to be readily available.

Re: Two cyclists killed, driver arrested
It occurs to me that inthe vast majority of cases people killing cyclists will only be given a lengthy sentence (or indeed be punished at all) if they are caught being over the drink drive limit, on drugs or on the run from the police for other criminal activities.
So called law abiding citizens whom break the law to such an extent that they kill another human being & are driving dangerously (no less than this muppet) do so with impunity whilst the justice system says 'there there' poor thing, nasty cyclist in your way, never mind you'll not have the law applied to you properly at all and the judges allow untruths/twisted words whilst spouting off complete lies/untruths themselves..
Whilst I think the sentence is about right to me it highlights how inexcusable our system is when dealing with motorists whom kill whilst breaking the law (driving on the wrong side of the road for instance at speed whilst not having any idea what is there is dangerous..). That these acts are down played at every turn ensures there will never be justice for the needless deaths/serious injuries on our roads.
What if in this situation the driver had said 'the cyclists came out of no-where', or that they 'wobbled', that just wouldn't have washed, because he was drunk and on the run from the police.
TC, it appears there is an investigation underway

Thanks for that. The second link shows the IPCC investigation is still current. I suppose events have moved quite quickly in this case in that the prosecution was concluded within a couple of months. I just typed in the name of the defendant, which came back as zero results. Silly of me, on reflection.

Re: Two cyclists killed, driver arrested
I see that the driver's sentence has been upheld on appeal.
