They are called mopeds if you can't find them.

An S-Bike, surely?
It's the same the whole world over
It's the poor what gets the blame
It's the rich what gets the pleasure
Isn't it a blooming shame?

I was trying to remember the name of the ones you can still get in Belgium/Netherlands - NOT the French ones with engine over front wheel. Any ideas?

Hi,
Ah, the French one I used to race daily, caught me on the hills but lost on the flat, and I would win overall over 3 miles with ease.
No idea what they or the other is called. 40 years ago.

Would the Dutch ones be Batavus?
Though the pedals on this one are clearly just there for the law's sake, and maybe for starting.

I was in Huelgoat in Brittany on tour a couple of years ago. Its very nice there with a lake and nearby woods with spectacular rocks. I was sitting outside the hotel having a nice quiet beer when about 50 people turned up on those Velosolex things.

They buzz like hornets emmitting clouds of two stroke fumes. It shattered a peaceful scene. The Frogs like old quirky things just like us. I fitted right in

The German/Dutch ones you are thinking of have a small 2-stroke (yuk - even more polluting than a diesel!) engine made by Sachs.Image
