How to inflate tyres on the road?

Post by 3spd »

Having suffered a p******e on the commute home tonight, the first for years, I got out my trusty Topeak Pocket Rocket and reinflated the repaired tube. It did however seem to take forever.

What do people use?

^^^^^ yep, one of those, better than anything else I've used, wouldn't be without one, in fact I rarely bother with the full size track pump at home.

I don't know if you actually timed how long it took but most pumps of that kind of size will -if used briskly- inflate a reasonable sized tyre in a couple of minutes or so, provided the air is not leaking as you pump.

This can however seem like an age if you are running late, in the cold and the rain....

cheers

It was more the number of strokes.
So I was considering a CO2 canister or a (long) frame pump.
The small track pump is interesting.

My friend used a co2 canister, it froze on the valve which then snapped off when he tried to take it off - I hadn't even thought about them getting cold during use.

I'm also a Mini-Morph fan, primarily because once stowed in the pannier on the commuter it doesn't get forgotten and left at risk of theft when I park up for the working day.

The tourer has a Zefal HpX which I've trusted for over 25years. If I was buying new now I'd consider a Topeak Road/Mountain Morph stowed in the saddlebag.

I have a topeak morph too - whether it's got the 'mini' in its title I'm not quite sure, but it fits neatly under the top tube. Very easy to use up to about 90psi, but a right devil to get beyond that! Still, it'll get me home to where the track pump is waiting...

Incidentally, I'm talking 700x23s here. Trying to inflate a 700x38c will take forever.
Suppose that this room is a lift. The support breaks and down we go with ever-increasing velocity.

There's a few pumps in the Morph range, some are high volume and others high pressure, it's possible to get high pressure from a high volume pump but it's hard work and the other way round takes longer.

I Use one of these. Also have a biologic seat post pump for the Dahon

which I would fit to the other bike if it did higher pressures

The Park Tool frame pump seems to be a well-kept secret. My local bike shop recommended it to me last year and I am very satisfied with it.
