More worrying is he idiots who fire fireworks from the hand, no telling where they are going...
A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

It's similar to walking or motoring while all this is going on - in other words, apart from the effects on animals, nothing special except some pretty lights and traffic queues whenever a large display chucks out, for you to smile smugly at avoiding.

having commuted/cycled for a good number of years, thru all sorts; Easter, Mid-summer, Eid, christmas, Halloween, various bonfire nights (whatever day of the week), I have never had any concerns or problems, indeed Eid is probably the worst as i have to travel past a couple of mosques and some very careless peds and motorists, on my to and from work.

Hi all

Glad to hear the actual evening isn't going to be too much of a pain!

However I must say, couple weeks ago I did ride over empty fireworks cartridge, The spike end that goes into the ground, and it frightened the life out of me as I was cycling along. I actually stopped, to see if anything was wrong, and eventually found the culprit and chucked it into the hedge!

Safe riding guys! Last week was a bit rubbish, I saw 2 accidents in Bristol, involving people without lights, people with lights, blood, ambulances, not fun

As I was riding home on Saturday night there was a firework released into the road ahead of me aimed at a WVM, I was considering crossing from the nearside lane I was in across the road onto the pavement to be safe but decided against it and only had to ride through the cloud of smoke.

Clearly night shifts are befuddling my brain as i fail to understand why cycling over an old firework is a problem?

Hospital?

I never get any sleep due to having 2 dogs. They think the appropriate response to noise outside is to make noise inside...

They tend to let go as the propellant phase starts, normally out of shock. Because it's a shock reaction the firework is thrown....

Mine just finds a corner and shakes. I have found that a loud TV can drown out some of the noise and delay lower the start of the fear. Even though she's never had any bad experiences, she hates loud bangs (thunder as well as fireworks).

I've got a rat dog (patterdale) and she is fine. It's my staff that goes mental, he was beaten at his last home with metal pipes so tends to be quite nervous.

<completely_off_topic>A previous dog I had was not good with other dogs so once a week I took him to a class to help. The class was basically lots of problem dogs and let them all have a great run together in the woods (all off lead) with a couple of specialist behaviourists (to make sure the owners let the dogs behave like dogs - and it was a real surprise at how rare squabbles were and how harmless those few that happened were). One week a previous attendee came along and we were all in the car park dogs on leads and a group of walkers walked past and one had a walking stick and this previously calm Border Collie went ballistic, leaping around trying to get away. And the instant the walkers had passed out of sight the dog was immediately calm, just sitting there completely happy with the world - like a switch had been switched on and the off again. And it was a rescued Border Collie whose previous life was unknown. (The owner was aware of the behaviour so whilst we were all surprised the owner was not - but nothing she could do except wait for the walkers to pass).
<end_off_topic ... sorry>

I came home one year to find my cats with their back legs on the back of a chair and their front legs on the middle window frame - watching the fireworks out of the window ;)

(Bottom half of the window was frosted glass)
