Around my neck of the woods the old A6 from the northern outskirts of Leicester at Rothley to the southern edge of Loughborough is a good road as most through traffic now uses the new dual carriageway A6. The old road - outside the villagers- is wide, with gentle gradients and lightly trafficked.
The B4114 running from the southern edge of Leicester is called 'Coventry Road' as it was the predecessor to the M69 and probably part off the Fosse Way. it's generally a wide fast road, and, outside of the rush hours, isn't too bad traffic-wise. It's really only a useful route between Leicester and High Cross to join the Fosse Way (which runs as a bridleway for a mile or two north from High Cross to Fosse Meadows).

Happy memories of that road. I used it a few times when I first moved down south, riding from North Herts back via Bedford up to Derby and then via Ashbourne into Cheshire. Then gradually it got "improved" (= ruined for any practical travelling by bike), with dual carriageways in various places, and pedestrianisation in Leicester town centre that made it impossible to find a way to the other side.

In my opinion, the B709 is the better bicycle route to Edinburgh; the A7, while quite picturesque in places, carries too much fast traffic for my taste. The road less travelled.

I thought the Langholm to Edinburgh day, via the B709 and Peebles one of the best of my LEJoG

Happy days! The first long ride I did was from Cambridge to Ilkeston, Derbys on the Raleigh roadster I usually used for commuting to lectures. A604 (now the A14) and A6 from Kettering to Derby. Both perfectly rideable, even pleasant, then. One of those things that seems a good idea in the pub, but turned out to be a lot harder than I thought.

Didn't have time to watch the whole thing, but the first maps they showed seemed to be of Roxburghshire, which is about right for the A7.

I haven't got the Goddard book yet, but the "Then and Now" one duly turned up from Santa today :D

Wonderful nostalgia, and I've learned a few things even for the bit near me.

Looked like the B 709 highlighted unless the A7 was further along into the video. I didn't get very far through it.

The old surface at RedHouse where the A639 Wakefield - Doncaster road crosses the A1

This is a remnant from the pre dual-carriagewaying in the 60's

Remnants of old roads reminded me of following the cycle route up Loch Lomond on LEJOG in 2009. Some of it was obviously the old A82, some they had just made the pavement into shared use (presumably where the old road was buried under the new road) but there was one bit (I think around Inverbeg) where there was a narrow path which seemed to have a good surface which I realised was also part of the old road when I spotted the edge of a cats eye peeping out from the grass at the edge of the "path".
