Had a puncture today

Post by Mick F »

Just thought I'd share this fact with you all.
First one since 2nd Dec last year.

Lovely sunny day, riding up past Lydford Gorge and as I climbed the hill near the castle, I felt my rear tyre going flat.
Nice sunny bench to sit at and I took my time fitting a new tube, and then inflating with a CO2 canister. I was away cycling again within 20mins.

I found where the hole was by seeing the tell-tale chalk marks, but there was no "offending article" to be seen. Could have been a thorn or a nail that went in then came out.

Tube fixed whilst sitting in the sun in the back garden. :D

This is what happens when the P* Fairy contracts out his work. You get a slap dash job done and the rider cycling merely on there way

But how many miles?
That's surely a more correct estimate than time.

Yes, you are correct-ish
However, what about WHAT miles?
Were these miles on a towpath, a cycle path, leafy lanes, tracks, city streets, A roads, B roads, dual carriageway hard shoulders?

Mine were all of that .......... except any towpaths.

What tyres too?
Vittoria Rubino (treaded) 23mm for 672miles
Vittoria Rubino Pro slicks 23mm for the latter 1,292miles.
1,964miles in total.

BTW, I keep records.

Checked the ride diaries:-
I punctured on 12 Jan this year 2,394 ago(another low mileage year)
Before that 4 April 2013 9,421miles between the two :)

Noticed the hedge trimming season has begun so im expecting p........ Not sure why as I've not had one in 3 years, in fact only 3 since 2011, or 12000 mixed surface miles on marathon supremes.

Must be the season - I had one last night too. I've put a thread in the technical section as I couldn't get the rear wheel off - fortunately close to home.

What puzzled me though was the hole wasn't on the outside of the tube but the side against the rim tape - which is smooth.

It is indeed hedge trimming season I caught the culprit red handed last Sunday near Hay on Wye he tried to escape into a field in his tractor but I saw him :D

I had one of those. However it was only after I had two more in the same place that I found the offending article - a tiny piece of grit embedded almost invisibly in the carcass.
