EXAL SP19 RIMS 559-19 26" CERAMIC S/WALLS D/EYELET 36H

I have come across a deal of 2 new of these for £19.

Any opinions here whether they worth the bother esp with the ceramic side walls?

Thought might be a good way to learn wheel building. Any one any idea what the spoke length would be for Shimano Parallax hubs (FH-MC18 I think, from my dawes 1-Down of 1999) for rear wheel?

I've used other Exal rims and been happy with them. At that price, essentially a BOGOF, it has to be worth a try. Spoke length - looking at Exal website (under rim/spoke calculator) and it shows an ERD of 538 http://www.exal.be/ from there you can plug in your hub and number of spoke crossings into a number of on line spoke length calculators such as Spocalc.

I don't think Exal have ever produced ceramic rims....these are listed in silver anodised or black powder coat.....http://www.exal.be/

Sorry, brain fart, I linked you to something from a previous thread reply.....

Could it be that the seller has got it wrong/wrongly translated, etc?

I wondered if something was lost in translation; the stickers on the rims say nothing of any ceramic coating....?

cheers

They are exactly as described in the Ebay listing - alloy rim with a thin ceramic coating. I know because I bought a pair from http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PAIR-OF-EXAL- ... 35d8867b8d . The vendor seems to stock a variety of rims and spokes at more than reasonable prices - the £18.95 for a pair of those rims includes postage as well. I've bought other rims and spokes from him as well and to use Ebay parlance items arrive quickly and as described.

You'll get the right spoke length here https://leonard.io/edd/

+1

I got a pair too, and also in a separate transaction (for a different wheel) 48 DT Swiss Competition spokes for £11.85. And items were fine and delivered fast.

He does have limited stock - eg spokes come in a restricted list of lengths, and I needed 36 but he sells them in bundles of 16. And somewhat annoyingly he does not include, or even sell, nipples so you have to go elsewhere for these. But v. good value if he has what you want.

Just goes to show, every day is a schoolday.
Pity he doesn't seem to have any in 700c.

Hehe I was trying to not let the cat out of the bag until I had sorted out an order, decide to get some or not as not that many and I know the vultures here will gobble them up

here all his rims - http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Rims-/177821/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ipg=&_from=&_ssn=nidderdalecyclesandhire

seems these are direct replacements for Sputniks which have erd 537?

No idea if they're seconds but nothing wrong with anything I've bought from there.

well I got my pair today. The seller must go thru a lot of sellotape as packing was almost covered in it. As far as I can see these are good alternatives to Sputniks?
26" -
Sputnik erd 537
EXAL SP19 erd 538.

both are heavy duty?

I placed them side to side and they look the same spoke wise.

Definitely some kind of rim coating

so a bargain for any one who uses 26" Sputniks? and wants a spare pair of rims

a1b2c3 wrote:How are you getting on with these rims? I'm considering them but the price seems a bit too good to be true. How is the rim coating?

I haven't tried them yet just nearly built the front one. in no hurry. I got them really so I could practice wheel building and end up with some thing I might use at not too much money. I doubt in fact I will ever use them bar accidents as I am a light user and have never worn out any wheels, other than the rims cracking at the eyelets, on the original wheels on my Dawes 1-Down, I don't use the brakes a lot and when I do very lightly

They look to be as good as the equivalent Sputnik. Even if the ceramic coat wears off you still have a Sputnik type rim? The eyelets seem better than those of the Sputnik I had built up a year a go now in that the nipples do orientate themselves in the holes properly. The join is very neat with no ridge on the breaking surface. I get the impression the black coating is better than the Sputnik. So if you are a Sputnik user it is a no brainer I think to get a pair and they are cheap? I think they are cheap as they are end of line not made any more? Certainly no reference to them on the Exal website?
