Shimano 105 Rear Derailleur cog/chainring capacity

Post by fieldmouse »

Just setting up my touring bike for a trip ..............It has 28/38/48 chainrings and Shimano 105 Medium cage length rear mech. Would this be o.k. with an 8-speed 12-32 cassette , or am I pushing it on bigger than 28 ? Try it and see , maybe ?

My 105 medium cage (5701) is easily coping with a 34T 10 speed cassette. That did surprise me but I had purchased a 9 speed MTB mech' to use. Still in its bag. Chainset is 46/36/26.
So I would say just try it if you already have it. If still having to purchase then think about using an MTB mech'.
You'll never know if you don't try it.
