Cycle GPS for europe and UK that uses AA or AAA bateries

Post by pilchard »

I am taking my bike down to Santander and cycling up through spain and france and up from portsmouth to the midlands touring and camping. Therefore I need a SAT NAV that doesn't need recharging (ie one that uses disposable batteries) and has good mapping facilities for the aforementioned countries - and the usual requirements - good interface and mounting - visible screen even in the sunlight ect...

I should be grateful for any pointers / recommendations

Thanks

actually I think I might have answered my own question.. does that ever happen to you? You ask a question and then suddenly realise what the answer is? There seems to be a product on the market called portapow - which will enable me to charge a cycle satnav in the security of my own tent at night. Please let me know if there is some flaw I have missed in this solution - or if you have a better solution - but I reckon that should do it

Cheers

You can get battery rechargers which take AA batteries which will recharge your sat nav. The advantage being you don't have to choose your unit based on that.

If you are still looking, I use a Garmin etrex 20, good in sunlight and uses 2xAA batteries - lasts a couple of days on rechargeable NiMH

I think, rarely, this question has a simple answer.

Etrex 20 as recommended above.

With a version of free OSM loaded.

I particularly recommend openfietsmap - google it.

But take plenty of time pre-trip to figure out how it all works.

Yup, eTrex 20 and OpenFietsmap. Great combination.

The portapow itself needs charging, so you need mains electricity maybe one night in 4, rather than every night. It will also take longer to charge.

I have a gpx60csx (now superceded with a higher model number).Uses AAs and I use rechargeables locally and disposables on longer tours. You can buy AAs anywhere without any bother.

openfietsmap is brilliant

small screen though & very reflective. I'm going to fit a trimmed down matt mobile phone screen protector to mine.
