E-bike conversion kit

Post by neilob »

I'm thinking of getting my wife's bike converted to electric assistance. She doesn't want a flat bar hybrid type 25kg monster but something more subtle on her road bike. It has Shimano Tiagra groupset and 700c wheels. Anyone have experience of the conversion kits that are available? I know it may not seem the most cost effective route but sticking to her trusted Bianchi is what she wants. If relevant, it's an alloy frame with carbon forks.

How about:-

Saves having to rebuild any wheels and crank drive electric assist is rated very highly be a lot of people as you can deliver the power through your gears. Front wheel kits are also available but are not so popular from comments I have heard/read.

The Q 100 CST is one of the most discreet electric hubs - rear wheel drive , takes a cassette and lets you use all existing drive train components.

as oldbloke suggests this

is worth a look, if it fits OK.

cheers

Thanks for the suggestions. But £4000 for the Gruber is out of my league! Neat idea though.

Dragging up a 2 week old thread, but for future reference:

The Gruber is now called Vivax, and the conversion kit costs from £2200 to around £2800 depending on what options you go for, plus £150 fitting.

The Vivax version is essentially silent, while the former Gruber incarnation made a whirring noise in use. The difference is a switch from 3 stage to 2 stage gearing, running in a grease bath if that is the right wording. It is compatible with Shimano Hollowtech 2 groupsets iirc.

I believe the 4k cost refernced includes a supplied carbon framed road bike.

Still an expensive project though.

Cheaper road bike conversions would be less discreet and heavier - perhaps from a few hundred and a few kilograms, but offer more power and potentially range

It is important to do lots of homework to find what you want for your requirement. That is why I have not linked to any kits or reviews in this post.

My Vivax-Gruber comment is based on conversations I have had with the supplier for my own project.
