I find it cleans just as well, even after multiple uses.

WS costs more than diesel:- http://www.diy.com/departments/bq-white ... 048_BQ.prd but doesn't stink the same, and can be used over and over again making cost negligible.
I bought 4ltr a few months ago for chain cleaning and occasional brush & tar spot cleaning(it's good for removing oil stains from clothing too ) the first for at least 5years+

Re: White spirit chain cleaning question
I've a technique I sometimes have to resort to when touring.
My chain is filthy and dry. I'm on the road. What do I do.
I find a garage and rooting around in the rubbish bin, I pick out an empty car-oil container.
I get half a litre of diesel in that.
I cycle out the country where I find an old dump or something.
I rotate the pedals backwards while pouring the diesel over the chain.
It dries with a residual lubrication as I cycle on.
I don't know what effect this has on subsequent wear. IME, nothing affects that!

I keep a separate small container of clean white spirit for spot cleaning (incl. hands when oil painty). One common use is getting the grunge off things you have just purchased where you peel the price tag off and then have the grief getting the glue mess left behind off without damaging what you've just purchased !!!
