well I got slightly excited when I saw this 'affordable limits' gizmo;
http://www.bikerumor.com/2015/04/22/affordable-limits-power-meter-fits-any-bike-regardless-of-pedals-cranks-or-hubs/#more-100183
which is claimed to work with any bike, any gruppo, any crank, any wheelset, and all for pennies!
Is there a snag?
You betcha.... using this gizmo only measures the left leg's power output.... and fitting it increases your Q value by 15-20mm.
Never mind, eh?
As you were, then....
cheers
affordable power meter...?

Re: affordable power meter...?
Hi,
Its a bit like saying all you need is a HR monitor. (the marketing hype for their device).
They play down (avoid) the question on Q factor.
Power meter = the ultimate performance tool
So for us mortals what do you do on bad days when you drop 30 watts........get depressed............

Re: affordable power meter...?
Why can it not do the right leg as well? (A second one obv)
Ok, they are planning that. But still $250...

A shortcut has to be a challenge, otherwise it would just be the way. No situation is so dire that panic cannot make it worse.

Re: affordable power meter...?
Many of the power meters on the market today only measure one leg, so I wouldn't say that's a massive problem.
Re: affordable power meter...?
Initially these look great, a good solution to fit to older bikes and move between bikes. I was getting excited.
But yes that huge increase in Q factor is a problem as is the fact that the pedals need spanner flats. None of the more modern pedals we use, Look and Shimano SPD have spanner flats anymore.
Left leg only doesn't seem to be a real issue for the vast majority of people, yes the ideal is for both but then affordability decreases significantly.
I still think the Stages meters are one of the best solutions if you have a modern bike with compatible cranks. There are reliability problems, I got one for my daughter, all was great until I had to replace the battery after 9 months. Then each new battery only lasted at most 2 days. The replacement crank so far is also working great, we'll see what happens in a few months time.
The Garmin Vectors also seem good, but vunerable to damage with their pods.
Oh well, the quest for an affordable, reliable power meter continues.

They have said it will work with pedals without spanner flats and just the hex key. https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/limi ... r#comments
