How to secure rear mech cable without a brazed stay

Post by 20130814 »

I bought an old frame, which did have a brazed stay like this:

In the position where this one has been removed:

However, even if the one that had been removed was still there, it was no use, since it isn't the usual kind of metal cap into which the cable feeding into the rear mech can sit, and against which the cable can pull when changing gear.

I need to find a way to secure the cable against the frame, so that when I try to change gear on the rear mech, the cable remains in place. I have tried cable ties and also a jubilee clip, but neither worked.

I wondered if anyone might be able to offer any advice please about how I can sort this out? I suppose one option is to go to a frame builder and ask them to sort it, but I suppose that might be expensive. Dave Hinde in Northwich is about 7 miles from where I live, so maybe I could try that?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Isn't there a Sturmey Archer clamp that goes on the RH chainstay that you could buy?
You could fit it on in reverse.
Sorry for the poor zoomed-in shot, but you get the picture.

No, you need a metal cable stop.

I have a small bracket with a couple of noodle adaptors jubilee clipped to the chainstay, just next to another braze-on, that stop is shifting on the chainstay, and it services the 3spd hub very well...

Hi Bob - that sounds like an interesting solution. Would it be a big imposition if I could ask if you'd be able to take a photo of that please, so I can see what you did?

Thanks

Just run cable housing all the way and then either just cable ties or neater would be the add on clips usually used for hydraulic brakes.

Back in the late 50's early sixties and maybe later there was a trend amongst frame builders esp Continental ones, no brase on stops period for brakes gears or bottles. the notion that heat applied caused frame issues, imo it was a skill /cost issue. I'm sure everyone has seen the various campagnolo bottom bracket curved cable bends clamp on type, which in those days cabled above the bracket, well there were also neat derailleur stops by the same method, campag and shimano.. i 'm sure i have a couple i'll have a peruse.. with pics.. will

I will do, but it's a bit of a bodge. It works on mine because it's a 'bent trike, and therefore under the seat (or more importantly, away from legs)

FWIW the Sturmey Archer part is called a 'fulcrum clip' and comes in various sizes to fit different stay diameters.

cheers
