Cheap sprung saddle and supple tyre recommendation

Post by Vladimir »

Hi all,

So I've moved house, (yay), and now I ride to the station.
I didn't want to leave me brooks flyer saddle on a bike locked up outside the station, so I replaced with a "normal" saddle (on-one big nose).
Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is the reason why I had acute SIJ pain today.
So I'm wondering if you guys can recommend a cheap sprung saddle at all? Something that might work similarly to the brooks flyer.
So far I've found some suspiciously cheap ones:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vintage-Faux- ... 1359375877
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-CLASS ... 1517126904
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DAWES-LEATHER ... 1294602281

Additionally - I'd like to get a nice and supple tyre to run on the back to help with absorbing shock. At the moment I'm running a really rigid tyre from halfords. Any particular cheapish supple tyre out there that could help with this?

Any experiences or advice appreciated

I can't help with the saddle other than suggesting a suspension seat post maybe? Zoom's go for under 20 quid depending on your bikes size.
Again, depending on the bikes clearances, you'll not go far wrong with a Hyper http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/TYVIVOHY/v ... lding-tyre

The rubber-ball "sprung" Selle Royal saddles seem good value. Variety of widths. I think the "moderates" are similar shapes to the flyer.

I like Schwalbe Delta Cruisers. Others commonly recommended are City Jets and Vittoria Randonneurs Hypers IIRC.
MJR, mostly pedalling 3-speed roadsters. KL+West Norfolk BUG incl social easy rides http://www.klwnbug.co.uk

Thanks. I've seen the selle royal turn up on searches a lot.
Does anyone have any prolonged experience with them? Are they any good at absorbing shock?
My SIJs really need a rest. Today has been absolutely horrible, been in pain all day.

I've two, but one's on a folder, so twenty miles a day max really. The other's on a bike I'm fixing up so it's not been on a long ride yet. Both seem fairly shock absorbent, maybe 80% of a flyer's ability.

I completely disagree with that. My brooks flyers have kept me very happy over the last 2 years.
Before that it was an endless trial and error process with various "normal" saddles, including various gels and materials.
Funnily enough, I have found one unsprung saddle to be very good - and that's the Rido R2.
However, at the moment I'm still in the acute episode of SIJ pain, and when this passes and I get back in some sort of saddle, it has to be as forgiving as humanly possible.
I have one sprung saddle on order at the moment. Until that arrives - I am going to take my chances with locking up my brooks flyer outside the station.
Cheers

Tie an opaque plastic bag over it. Keeps the rain and sun off and the dafter criminals don't realise it's desirable, especially if the bike is unremarkable.

oh it's covered all the time anyway (anytime I'm not riding it, that is). Fortunately I've never had a brooks nicked, but unfortunately I've known fellow cyclists who have had their brooks nicked, despite the saddle being very old (30+ years), missing rivet and covered in a plastic bag...
Thanks for the advice, either way :)

Nice one.

If I were a bike thief my first choice wouldn't be one of those with a plastic bag over the saddle.

Ahh, yes, sorry, the acronym is second nature.
SIJ stands for sacroiliac joint. They transfer forces from the legs to the spine. They absorb a lot of shock from the saddle.
