but seriously it just looks like a brittle fracture to me, exactly what you would expect to see if the chain breaks chunks off a gearbox housing. The only thing that is slightly noteworthy (but not that unusual) is the bright mark near the top of the fracture. I can't tell for sure from the picture but it might be a pore in the casting.

I`m more intrigued by the cavity up the middle, is it meant to be there?
It extends from the crankcase inner to within a couple of mm from the bottom of the (Blind)threaded hole coming from the other end of this piece.
If it was solid(Apart from the threaded hole), this piece could be`taken out`by the chain without exposing a hole in the crankcase.

it is meant to be hollow, yes. A thick section piece that sticks out from the main casting is liable to crack if it isn't made hollow. It would be needlessly heavy, too.

I don't think that the idea of the thing getting knocked off would have entered into the thinking of the designer.

Thanks for that.I`m assuming it won`t be a problem when that void/hole is filled with epoxy/aluminium putty.
My plan is to use the broken piece as a guide to tap a blind M6 hole into the crankcase proper/putty and use a bolt to`pull`the broken piece back to its original position. As my fracture faces fit each other well, i obviously need something less viscous to bond them together, possibly the`non putty`version of the epoxy/aluminium.

You got lucky there. I've seen the results of a snapped chain on a Skorpion that punched a 2" hole in the engine casing. I'm aware it's a little (!) off-topic for the CTC forum, but what brand of chain was it?

If that had happened to my Skorpion I would have cried.

Why does it seem like every other poster on this forum is or was an MZ rider?

The DI2 Ultegra warranty has expired. Hopefully the epoxy bond would work...
Just curious if anyone can comment on the possible cause(s) of failure?

Freeloader, you may still be able to claim a replacement under the 'sale of goods act', which states that the goods must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose. It gives you up to 6 years to make a claim, but you have to prove that the goods were faulty at the time of purchase. You might benefit from posting a close up of the break and perhaps someone like Brucey or CJ might be able to identify a flaw. An expert opinion is what you need.
