I thought there was a 2.7V 0.3A bulb for the rear. Mind you we are talking about ancient history here.

I don't remember such a bulb in the official list of cycle bulbs in BS6873 (now irrelevant because the RVLR legal reference to it was deleted). And it was the extra current draw that made me ask Ever ready why they hadn't fitted the expected 0.3A 2.5V bulb to my new rear lamp . EDIT I was mainly writing because the lens prisms made me think it would have a wide even beam like a rear car lamp hence I was rather disappointed with the tiny (but very bright) letter box beam shape.

I used to cheat
You could get replacement bulbs that were "LEDs", slightly brighter and a much longer battery life... but then again shwing my age
