removing early HG cassette

Post by nicmarsh »

I have what i think is an early HG cassette. I am correct in thinking that to remove this I treat the smallest sprocket as a lockring and remove using 2 chainwhips?

removal is as you say, but that is a UG (UniGlide) cassette.

Uniglide:
Shifting is a bit clunky compared with hyperglide - you'll have to ease off on the pedal pressure during the shift.
Replacement cassettes are now rare, even on eBay, and most of what there is is narrow range - 13-23 or whatever .
Hyperglide cassettes can only be used if you grind down the wide spline on the sprockets to the same with as the other splines, and you'll still need the screw-on sprocket.
Uniglide cassettes last longer than hyperglide cassette, and also sprockets (other than the screw-on sprocket) can be reversed on the freehub to get more wear out of them.
On-the-road removal can be done using a short length of chain attached to a hook*. Bike chain in bottom gear, hook over the chainstay and attached chain wrapped round the smallest sprocket in reverse (from the underneath), pedal to unscrew.
* a DIY version of the original Pamir Cassette Cracker

Hi,
Might not have a freehub hollow retension screw either, ignore the hub bulge if there is one that means nothing........................

just removing for a good old clean, inspection and lube; I've been riding this cassette for 25 years and it certainly wont be replaced; its original!
