very small chain lube dispenser for touring
Re: very small chain lube dispenser for touring
Maybe I'm missing the point but I always retire my standard lube bottles when they're nearly empty for use when touring. It's not like they weigh much or take up alot of space.
Re: very small chain lube dispenser for touring
There's a 50ml finish line bottle in my touring tool kit - its been there over 10 years and might one day empty!
Convention? what's that then?

I cycle with a friend who uses the fish shaped soy source bottle that comes with tesco sushi. He fills them with enough for a lube on a weekend ride.

You should now have got a reply to your pm. Been up in the wilds of North Yorkshire for a week without a computer.
There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".

Re: very small chain lube dispenser for touring
@deckertim thanks- made me realise that the answer was staring me in the face most mornings. I use Somersets Shaving oil which comes in 15 or 35 ml bottles. I had not considered them before because I had thought the lids were heat-welded on, but they are just push fit. I reckon 1 x 15 ml for a 6 week tour (just one bike with chain) should suffice?
BTW, for my money, THE best cyclo-touring piece of equipment is shaving oil. 15 ml bottle lasted me 4 months last tour.

I rekon the chain shouldn't need lubing, unless you get caught in lots of downpours, and its washed off. When out on long wet mtb / rough stuff rides, and the chain gets dry and skweaky, I always stop off at a petrol station, dive into the waste bin, pull out an old 1 ltr oil can, then dribble that on the chain, then discard said bottle, then get some of that handy hand wipe, and rub the oil off the chain again, thus rubbing it in. Job done for nowt. Yes it could end up a potential sticky mess of you put a lot on, but far less of a mess than if the top of YOUR oil comes off in your bag.

Somersets shaving oil bottle worked brilliantly. Better than the bottle the oil (ProLink Gold) came in

Where does one carry oil on tour without the danger of accidental leakage. I do not fancy having to clean the inside of a pannier or its contents while camping. Under the saddle is not a option. I was envisaging a frame mounted solution.Any ideas?
Re: very small chain lube dispenser for touring
If you're worried about spillage I'd have thought keeping the bottle inside a heavy-duty zip-lock freezer bag would provide peace of mind; if you're extra-paranoid putting the above inside a tobacco/mints/whatever tin would provide crush-proofing.

Touring I carry a 1.5 ml plastic seed bottle

I put it inside a plastic coin bag (the ones you get from banks) and it goes inside my under-saddle tool bag.
Been using one for 13 years and never had any leaks.

Thanks
The small "fish" for Soy sauce that you find in supermaket's packet Sushi.
Holds the right amount for one chain, bring two and you'll be fine for 6 weeks
The green thing on the bottom left. In a small ziplock bag, job done.
It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,
since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.
Thus you remember them as they actually are...

a small bottle could be stashed in a number of places, eg;
-inside the handlebar end?
- inside the seat pin..?
- inside the steerer (removable top bung of course)?
- in one of those clips that goes onto bottle cage mounts and normally holds a mini-pump?
-be creative!
cheers

Put a dab of rubber cement/tub glue on the thread of the small bottle, then put the bottle in a ziplock bag.
Simple and effective so you can keep it in the tool bag. For belt&braces approach, put a small rag around, which is always useful.
Or like said above, put inside the seat tube taped altogether with some spare spokes and a piece of foam. If any leakage happens, would reduce the BB creaking
