Carbon Scrapheap?

Post by mrjemm »

Let us assume for one moment that despite all arguments in other threads about how wonderful carbon is, how light, how strong, how snazzy, etc... OK?

Remember, this is an assumption, so let us use our imagination and at least pretend this to be the case for the moment. Yes, suspend disbelief.

What about at the end of it's life? Be that a totally unlikely (seeing as we're assuming it to be mega top super here, remember? Ahem) breakage, or the colour is so last year, right? What happens to it?

I guess there are some who like to frame them, perhaps mounted with taxidermied wildilfe aboard, or cut-outs of Roberto Begnini, Silvio Berlusconi or some other Italian cycling god... But what about the rest of us? Can the speedy black stuff be reconstituted in any way? Is there a re-cycling for wonder-cycles out there?

Or do they just pile up on some heap in what used to be called the countryside before it became extra-suburbia?

If I ever manage to destroy one of my carbon fibre bike parts it'll go on display in the shed!

Unfortunately the only frame I've ever snapped was made from 4130 chromoly steel... :P

Don't they end up on some tip in a country that no one gives a damn about?

What, the cupboard in our dining room? Home of I don't know how many old mobiles, dead laptops and other assorted retro-tech... Not noticed the carbon frames in there yet, but I've got the children I bought from the local dragon head in there looking, those that aren't sold for bodyparts yet anyway...

Due to high demand and H&S controls, my storage facility (i.e. the cupboard in my dining room) can now only take on such frames that are undamaged, and fitted with safety attachments, such as wheels, tyres, seatpost, saddle (Brooks pref), chain, crankset, deurailler...

The damaged frame disposal/storage facility is in a location marked 'Giant', 'Trek' or 'Specialised' Marketing Department.

With the UCI being as they are, I suspect they'll know exactly what it is :-)
