Upgrading my MTB to v-brakes?
Upgrading my MTB to v-brakes?
Does anyone know if the Shimano Ez-fire plus shifters on my 18 year old Saracen mountain bike are likely to have sufficient pull to be suitable for full size v-brakes, without having the pads too close to the rims?
Re: Upgrading my MTB to v-brakes?
When Shimano introduced V's to it's groupsets* many of them had brake levers that would work either V on canti. There are different mounting points for the barrel of the cable in the brake levers.
Product codes and/or pictures of where the cable barrel attaches may help to tell.
*I'm not sure when this happened. Velobase still shows cantis in XT for 95.

V brakes were introduced in 1996 on XT M739 and XTR M950 groupsets.
If your Saracen is a '96 it is doubtful that the levers will have the cable pull unless it was running XT or XTR. The model number of the brifters will tell us for sure. You should be able to find it on the underside of the unit.
