Best road bike for under £1300? Tips for choosing and buying

Please let me know any recommendations and tips for buying a new road bike. I would prefer to spend less than £1000 (of course!) but this may not be enough... I trialled the

Scott CR1 20 today at the Burgate bicycle co. and was very impressed. Prices vary for the same model, and it would be great to hear any tips for getting the best deal if buying from a local shop. I live in Canterbury and there are several bike shops.
