Mavic MA2 maximum tyre width?

Post by breakwellmz »

Green and yellow label, 700c.
There seems to be widely varied opinion`ont internet on this, some saying they have no problem using tyres larger than the accepted norm for this width of rim.The owner wants to use 35-38mm width tyres.
Any thoughts?

IME having used 32mm on MA2 in the past I'd stop at 28mm.

Tyre technology has moved on in the twenty or so years since then so who knows what's possible now.

Agree with Gaz. True 28mm would be my upper limit. I'm currently using 32mm Vittoria Randonneur Pro II's on MA40's with no probs, but they actually measure around 28mm. Really nice tyre btw. Also running 2.25" on XM317's. They're a bit squirmy.

I replaced 28mm Marathons with 32mm this year on MA2's, they seem fine but do hang over the side a fair bit (6mm each side32- 20 rim width measured).

What they did do though, was make descending on bumpy roads a bit calmer.I have a small frame bike made from 531st which is a bit too rigid and it used to leap about bit too much descending on the thinner tyres.

Keith Bontrager used to re-roll MA40 road rims down to 26" for use on MTBs. Mavic ended up producing 26" rims with the same extrusion. Accordingly, up to 2" wide tyres should work, provided you don't run them at 100 psi.

Or, at the other extreme, under 20 psi. Mavic also widened their MTB rims a few years ago and lowered their recommended upper limits. They now say 2.1" max for the 17mm rims and 2.3" for the 19mm, although plenty of people still exceed those limits. Other factors come into play, too, like the tyre's casing, rider's weight, terrain, etc.

I have several bicycles with MA2s (700c and 27 inch) fitted, I personally would not fit any tyre on any rim where the tyre is bulging - much - beyond the braking edge of the rim (a small amount is ok).

I'm looking at an MA2 now (700c/green and yellow label) with a 700x23 tyre fitted and it looks about right. If you want wide tyres, I would suggest you need a wider rim than an MA2.

Thank you all chaps that sounds like a pretty positive no for bigger tyres.

The next obvious question-What wider rim has a similar ERD to an MA2?

Here’s a pic of the 700 x 32mm Vittoria Randonneur Pro II on MA40 at about 60 psi. As mentioned above, actual width is around 28mm. If their "35mm" is similarly undersized, I probably wouldn't be too concerned. :)
