Tyre Damage - how was it done ?

Post by fishfright »

Has anyone seen tyre damage like this before? Ive not seen anything like that before and thinking its chemical damage cause the rubber to degrade rather than wear related but thats a guess

Either the tyre had a skid in that area - hence the localised wear compared to adjacent section
OR
localised construction defect

Whichever way, the tread fell off in the weakened area ??

There seems to be a whole (larger) section where the rubber has crumbled. Issue with vulcanisation, perhaps?

Rear or front? If rear, do you often lock your wheel when stopping? If so, you may have a warped wheel which always stops in the same position under heavy braking.

Forgot to say not my bike so only have the photo to go on.

But i find it odd how the rubber has 'crumbled rather than the usual stick spot on rims wear

I had the same on my Conti GP4Season rear tyre. I put it down to being caused by a car pulling out on me at a roundabout.

Looks to me like skid wear above and below the bare bit.

Skid damage IMO. Look at the flat either side of the hole.
How old is that tyre? Aging may have made things worse.

could be skid damage, but the "skid" is very much one side only (broadside skid?).
My hunch might be the tyre sitting a bit high on the rim and/or wheel out of true at that point and the tyre rubbing on the inside of a mudguard stay mounting bracket normally found rivited to the mudguard, or protruding bolt from where the mudguard reflector is bolted on.

difficult to say but the carcass itself may be damaged beneath. Worth looking on the inside of the tyre and seeing what that looks like; it might be where the 'overlap' of the plies is, and if that is done badly then the tyre flexes in an odd way and that can cause delamination.

cheers

i wonder if it was a rear tyre on a fixed gear bicycle that was used to 'skid stop' - the gear fitted using that area more often than not.

Unless the tyre was seriously soft to start with, a skid wouldn't affect that length of tyre, unless the skidder was deliberately trying to skid on the same area of the tyre every time.

Edit: this was in reply to some of the other posts above, I didn't think about fixies.
