V brake stud sizes

Post by Si »

given no specialist kit apart from a steel rule, how do I determine the correct size of stud I need for this 2nd hand frame that I've just got, that hasn't got the V/Canti studs in the back? Unfortunately the frame is no longer made and I can't find any tech detail on it.

the two most common sizes are 8mm and 10mm.

If you have a one-bolt seatpost, try the bolt from that; it will most likely be M8x 1.25mm. You can also use an undersize bolt as pitch gauge BTW. So try an M6x1 bolt for pitch, too, if it is finer than 1.25mm.

Of course the LBS will help too, but they will probably just try bosses for size, which I would imagine you could do also.

cheers

cheers Brucey that's helpful...looks like an 8mm.

I did ask one mechanic but he said that they were either 8BA or 10BA. What the heck is a BA anyway? yep, I know that it's a bolt size but I always thought they were much smaller).

BA? blimey... was he on drugs or something? You are quite right, that is a much smaller thread; in BA a higher number is a smaller size.
