a looong shot...

Post by mig »

i have acquired a 16 hole rear, 700c wheel as per the attached photo. it has a damaged rear hub so i'm thinking to rebuild it as a track front as planet x seem to do a 16 hole front hub that's not top dollar.

as per the thread title would anyone know the ERD for the rim and if it requires special nipples? mr google has let me down terribly on this :(

Without knowing the exact year of the rim, measure your own ERD like this: http://sheldonbrown.com/rinard/spocalc. ... eHubAndRim

You should always measure your own ERDs as in my experience, they vary from rim to rim.

Get two old spokes and cut them off at the hub end to about a foot long. Screw a nipple on each of them so the spoke is level with the spoke head.

Slide the spokes into the holes but diametrically opposite each other and measure the gap between the cut ends.

Add that measurement to the overall lengths of the two spokes.

The final figure is your ERD.

Mavic have used many different nipple designs with different models of wheel and there are quite a few different versions bearing the 'Cosmic' name.

What do the old nipples look like?

Beware the rims that use standard nipples but require an additional seating piece (inside the rim) for each nipple....like these...

I think that 16 spokes is (just) enough for a front wheel if it is built right and doesn't see heavy use. Don't go nuts with the tension though; if you can find out what the OEM tension figure was, go with that.

cheers

viewed from the top the nipples appear to have an hexagonal head so methinks a special, long, thin tool is required to get the jaspers out. i suppose that is not unusual in this sort of wheel. i will investigate and revert.

ps. that tub was hugely well glued on ::flexes throbbing thumbs::
