coldsetting chainstay calamity? Advice needed

That's what I did from late 2004 when I "modernised" to 9sp from the old 6sp freewheel. I wrestled it in and out just like you.
I carried on like that until late 2007 when I had the frame resprayed, and I got Mercian to re-set it properly.

I m glad I didnt try and do my Dawes 1-Down frame to get a less dished wheel.....
