Middleburn INCY spider

Post by CPeachey »

With reference to CJ's article in Cycle is the big ring an "outer" or a "middle"?

Not sure what you mean ... Isn't this chainset just a double, but with two different BCDs? Also check out the one that Sugino produce.
I should coco.

The big ring is mounted on the back of the spider in the "CYCLE" picture.
This would have been the "middle" position had shoulders been machined on the outside for a triple.
A "middle" chainring has the bolt recess on the oposite side to an "outer" ......so it would appear to have a "middle" ring fitted?
see Middleburn's picture here...

ps I already have Middleburn cranks and am looking to change the spider/ring combination

From a quick look at the link you've provided: "5-ARM 110/58bcd double spider ... developed for touring. The most popular ring sizes are 22T with a 40T."

In so far as I can tell from the website, the only 40T 5-arm 110mm BCD chainrings Middleburn do is for their compact road doubles. A 40t would be the largest inner chainring from that range, the smallest is 34T (or 32T from the MTB selection). The 110 BCD outers range from 46t to 52t.

If the outer ring is an inner from a road double it would suggest that it does not have ramps/pins to help with the upshift from the granny :? .

The chainring in the OP's link looks to be a 40T chainring with shifting pins and ramps so they must do one. There are 5-arm 110 BCD middles in the MTB section but they range from 32-36t, and the middles for the road triples are 130 BCD. Perhaps Middleburn haven't fully updated their website.

Oh hang on, I've just seen this:-

"NEW MIDDLEBURN WEBSITE GOES LIVE
POSTED ON: MARCH 31, 2014

So here at Middleburn we have big plans over the coming year and beyond. Our new website is one of the elements which will help us to share everything we will be doing with you. Please be patient with the appearance of the site as we are finishing it off while its live. Not all the information about our wide range of British made components is currently on the site but please call on 01420 52022301420 520223 or email at sales@middleburn.co.uk and we will be happy to help with any information currently not on the website."

Probably best to contact Middleburn or one of their dealers.

It's a specially made ring. Middleburn's website might not be completely up to speed on that.
