Actually it's amazing what you can do with LEDs and three AAs. The 48 LED camping lights I use on my bike take a full amp from three AAs - to the extent that I've heard rumours of smoke coming from the spindly wires of similar models - but they work for an impressive amount of time, before dimming and still giving useful light ...

The rechargables I use claim 2000 mAh, ie 2 Ampere-hours. At 1.2V, that is 2.4 Wh. Three batteries would give 7.2 Wh. So a 5W load should be sustainable for nearly 1.5 hours.

Surely a missprint, and it's actually 3 x AAA as this is a common format (and a shoe-in for 18650 lithium?) a 3 x AA torch would be much larger diameter, and the head would then be huge, lets see, about 36mm diameter body and the head 40 odd? Be fabulous run-time if it is 3 x AA though!

My Fenix torch has a mode where it flashes SOS in Morse code, so this is possible.
