Tyre for kids road bike? 600? Where to find one?

I have got my son a second hand road bike that needs a new tyre. The current tyre says 600 x 28a on the rim. It is on a Decathlon racing bike, not available to buy new anymore. I am having difficulty locating a new tyre for it. Any clues as to where I can get one? And if they no longer make them, would I have to replace the whole wheel instead, and is this possible?

I am totally clueless about bikes/tyres/wheels so please speak slowly and clearly!!

CTC has a guide to tyre sizing here

600x28a seems to be an ETRTO (ISO sizing) size of 541-28.

This doesn't help much as I can't find a replacement for that size.

Found this thread on a fixed wheel forum where FIXEDGEARNUT has a post from January 2008 with a link to a post by SEAMUS on ACF (Another Cycling Forum). The link suggests he had found a source for 600 x 25/28 tyres.

Unfortunately the link appears to be to a "members only" part of ACF. There are a fair number of ACF members on here, but I'm not one of them.

Any passing ACF member care to investigate?

600A is 540/541mm which is the same size as 24 x 1 1/8 and 24 x 1 3/8.
These are a standard size on wheelchairs, so its fairly easy to find tyres that size (including the Schwalbe Marathon Plus).
Just Google for "wheelchair tyres" to get quite a few tyres in that size.

Somebody once queried whether wheelchair tyres were OK for bikes. It's pretty clear from the detailed specs that Schwalbe at least publish that their wheel chair tyres are the same quality as their bike tyre of the same range, the only difference being that the sidewalls are smooth to protect users' hands. One of my neighbours is a wheelchair user who travels the world inspecting wheelchair access for a travel company. He was telling me has has just been doing a lot of off=roading in South America (Columbia ?) and he is really pleased with the quality of his schwalbe Marathons.

Decathlon should be able to order you a 600A as it's a French size and they were putting them on kid's racers until recently. Always follow the ETRTO measurements in mm on the tyre rather than inches as notional 24", 26", 27", etc, covers a multitude of incrementally but crucially different bead diameters.

I had exactly the same problem.

The Schwalbe tyre that you have ordered will be quite fat and not really what you want on the bike.

In the end I found an amber wall tyre made by Impac which was 28mm 600A from my local shop. The tyre is heavy and not high pressure but it is a sort of racing tyre.

No idea where to get one now, Google search has fell flat.

SJS Cycles had them at the time but no longer list them.

37-540 or 24 x 1 3/8 is a fat tyre size no matter where you buy it.

Schwalbe do the 540 size in various wheelchair tyres as slim as 25-540 and as I mentioned above, the technical specs are the same as bike tyres but with hand-friendly sidewalls.

The irony is that the real wheelchair racing stuff is 700C - presumably because originally wheelchair racers had to use bike tyres. I see Schwalbe even do tubs for wheelchairs.

The Schwalbe wheelchair catalogue is available as a pdf download at schwalbe co.uk (as well as their bike catalogue and technical info.)

As with so much other stuff, availabilty may be the problem but it seems to me that Schwalbe really do try to serve the market with their wide range of tyres and sizes.

Unfortunately that seems to be the wrong tyre, here is a 600x28A

It is 37mm width, which may (and probably will not) not fit a junior sized road bike that
has 28mm width tyres without fouling the frame, brakes and mudguards (if fitted).
And the rim size is 541mm for the 28mm, whilst the above is 540mm.
I think the width is the real issue, and fat 37mm tyres aren't going
to be as good as 28mm on a road bike, very noticeably so, if they fit.

Afraid not....

24x1 1/8 has a 540 mm bead and 24x13/8 has a 520 mm bead.

A 20 mm difference means a tyre that will not fit.

ALthough not cheap, St John Street is always a good place to start for difficult items.
