+1 - I often sit on the top tube (also KoM, 531DB). But I suspect I'm quite a bit lighter than Mick F!

Hi,
Yep -
The Merckx pose is just that for mortals, I prefer one foot on the pedal and the thigh resting on the TT :)

Current CTC advice seems to be to protect the tube wit the latest edition of cycle :D

Yeah, that's me too when waiting for the lights to turn green. Tippy-toes is a bit a strain after a minute or two.

531 is 531 to all intents and purposes. Doubt ST is better for sitting on than C.
My Columbus Brain tubed bike has a TT butting arrangement of 0.8/0.6/0.6. Sat on that many a time. Need more buttock padding though.

You can sit on the top tube at the cafe without fear of bare cable marring the paint, or your office pants.

Though could cause a vent of the spleen,

then turn a means of transport so green,
into an extreme torture machine.....

There's a lot to be said for a compact design,
for keeping the family jewels all in line.
Perhaps just a guess, but oh what a mess,
a high toptube can cause to the unwary masculine

Horizontal is much superior to compact- sloping for this

I wouldn't bet on it

531C top tubes are 0.8/0.5/0.8
Most 531ST top tubes are 1.0/0.7/1.0 (although some early ST tubesets were built lighter than that)

That is pretty significant in terms of denting resistance, I'd have said.

cheers

i'm obviously a materials simpleton but figures like that of tube thickness always amaze me. less than a millimetre seems just ridiculously thin to me.

753 'track' top tubes go down to 0.3mm wall. On a lot of bikes the paint is thicker than that, and you can visibly flex such a top tube between finger and thumb. You are not alone in finding this a little surprising!

I thought the major cause of top tube damage was trying to close the overhead garage door while the bike is still propped up in the doorway.

No? Just me then.

TOP TUBE – Oval 37,3×26,1 mm – Thickness 0,7 – 0,4 – 0,7 mm – Length 600mm – Weight 227 g

well it seems my best bike's top tube is as above. i'll keep the mig derriere of it for the time being.

re. tube sets. i know of one UK supplier but are there more? i'm always interested in steel frames/tubes so may acquire a set of classic tubes and lugs for use in the future.
