Shimano freewheels

How do I tell how many speed cassette the freewheel takes on the wheels I've been given?

7 speed freewheels are about 35mm long.

8/9 are about 39mm.

To clarify;

7s = 6 x (4.9mm) + 1.9 = ~31.3mm

8s = 7 x (4.8mm) + 1.9 = ~35.5mm

9s = 8 x (4,35mm) + 1.9 = ~ 36.7mm

in each case the dimension is from the inside of the #1 sprocket to the outside of the smallest sprocket.

Blackbike's dimensions are about right for the length from the shoulder (on the freehub body or the freewheel thread) to the inside face of the dropout, i.e. they are greater than the width of the freewheel/cassette by about half the width of the chain, so that the chain doesn't foul the dropout when you are using the smallest sprocket.

cheers

Where do I measure on an empty freewheel?
Mine measures 35mm from the lip at the wheel end to outer edge.
Presume it's 8 spd.

which do you have?

If a cassette with ~35mm long splines, you have 8s/9s/10s.
