JOGLE'er Killed in Bettyhill

Post by puffin »

Of all the places on JOGLE you would expect danger, surely Bettyhill is way down the list. Huge condolences to the family, friends and co-rider.

Sadly rural roads are not as safe as some would think, cyclists are three times more likely to be killed on rural roads than urban roads.

As above, I guess it shows we are vulnerable whatever the road, and possibly more so on roads where there are descents, bends, unanticipated closing speeds of vehicles, and any number of other factors. Just by crunching the numbers alone, the large numbers of E2E'ers each year will amount to some of the accidents on these roads and sadly some with very tragic consequences.
Not that this in anyway excuses anyone from dropping their vigilance of all other road users. A sad day for the family, all involved and Jogle. RIP.

Yes, but those figures are massively skewed by the much higher casualty rate of national speed limit main and trunk roads which are almost all in "rural" (here simply meaning not built-up) areas. That does rather overstate the dangers of your local country lanes. I'd be wary of riding on particular roads rather than riding in the countryside. Not that anyone would suggest the A836 as a road to avoid.

Sadly. Another casualty. Hope it's not too bad. Best wishes to the cyclist.
Is it just the way these things are reported, but it seems like E2E rides get a disproportionate number of casualties.

I have no idea what kind of lorry was involved in this but last year I had several frights with timber lorries who never slowed down and expected you to dive for the ditch. This was on the Lairg to Altnaharra road not too far away. I really should have pushed this further at the time but inertia sometimes takes over. Fish lorries used to be a menace particularly at nights when most people would be off the roads. Look at the long streaks of rubber caused by emergency braking which are common in north Sutherland.

Unless you have proof that your experiences are in any way related to the tragedy described in the thread title then I think your post is in very poor taste.
