Hi All, Never really done anything like this before so any insider/local knowledge on the route "i've made up!" would be really helpful. I guess any bike shops or people willing to help with mechanical on the way - would be also greatly appreciated :-) have a good day.

I'll try and post comments on my finding as I go too to help others. Thanks B-)

Days 6 ands 10 aren't viewable without logging in. Could you correct this?

Day Nine.
You've made to Launceston fine. Well done! Even done Rob's Passage! :D

However, you've gone to South Petherwin, then Kenard's House to follow the A395 all the way over Laneast to the A39.
Sorry, bad move.

When you cross the Tamar into Cornwall and go past Launceston Rugby Club on your left, take the next turn right. Through the bends, up the hill past the water treatment works, then left again and keep going.
This will bring you out on the A388, turn left and then right at the mini roundabout and up to St Stephens.
Cross straight over, (or turn right then left), and follow this road right through Egloskerry to bring you out near Davidstow on the A395. Turn right.
Only a few miles later, and you'll be on the A39 into Camelford.

Mick F, thanks so much for spending the time to look at this. I'll tweak this part of the route tomorrow.

Bicycler, I've now made both routes public... sorry too many days... must have missed some! ;-)

I'll make my usual comment about crossing the Mendips: unless you like the busy A38 or detest hard packed limestone, take the strawberry line from Sandford through Winscombe to the tunnel, then do a short bit of the A38 and head for the Bawdrip NCN33 passing under the busy A39 however you like, to enter Bridgwater the quieter way. Good luck!

DAY 8: Worcester - Taunton

Although the A403 from Aust to Avonmouth has a SUP on parts of it the cycle route to/from Aust detours off it along the route I've plotted an alternative from Elberton to Axbridge.

Hazards are at:
Mile 5, You share the road with the traffic, mainly HGVs
Mile 7, Watch out for the rabbits, the path runs through an quiet area mostly frequented by rabbits.
Mile 9, Hold your breath as you pass the sewage works and admire the wind turbines. You might meet the swans too so allow 15 minutes for the hold up if they are on the path stubbornly refusing to move.
Mile 17, Careful you don't miss the left hand turn and there was gravel on the inside of the turn the last time I rode it.
Mile 30, You stay on the Strawberry Line to Axbridge.
Mile 33, The tunnel although illuminated needs proper lights.

The route through Lancs and Cumbria seems alright, missing the dangerous sections of A6/A591 west of Kendal and A6 around Bamber Bridge. The remainder of the roads are busy and direct but manageable single carriageway, which I expect is what you need on a high daily mileage trip. I suspect your accommodation is already booked but you could probably have done without the 20 mile diversion to Ravenstonedale and back.

Your route from Portishead to Taunton is very similar to the route I recently followed. It provides a very flat route through Somerset closely keeping to the M5 route that finds the gap in the Mendip Hills. You do miss seeing Cheddar Gorge but the Strawberry Line could be followed if you wanted a bit of sight seeing on the way. It also avoids the need for any route finding through Bristol.

From Sidcot I took Barton Road to cross the motorway at Luxton then followed lanes to East Brent from where I followed the A38. (This avoids Winscombe Hill)

At the end of your day 8 as you enter Taunton it is better to take the old A38 via Bridgewater Road then Hamilton Road thus avoiding the busy dual carriageway into Taunton.

Hi,
how did you find your route as a whole especially the last 2 days? Are you able to tell me what point is the ferry crossing in Scotland?
I'm starting the route on Saturday and have used your route as a guideline with a few tweaks as I'm staying at different point. Any tips you can send me would be gratefully appreciated.

Hope the legs are recovered now :)

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob, Just surfacing! DONE!

Videos's here: http://www.be-interactive.co.uk/blog/jo ... s-end.aspx (also with daily stats)

So Strava's mileage i would say was out by at least 5 miles each day (climbing was quite a bit out at times) - going by my actual Garmin data. Day's 1 to 6 were fine - I would change the route not to go through Glasgow - wasn't nice as roads were really confusing nearly went on the motorway a few times! Kendal and Shap was a great change to my route I decide on the road. Unfortunately for me I always knew the SW wind was going to be hard but didn't plan on the tail end of the hurricane from the US! So flat felt like going up hill and down hill was 15mph... :-( thus not making up any of the time of the climbing... so last few days I had to change stops to hit my 10 day challenge (and time off work allowed) - from Oakhampton I had to blast down mostly the A30 which I wouldn't recommend if you have the time to do this differently. Ferry - not sure what you mean here... we drove to John O'Groats - arrived at 2.30am then set off directly in the morning after breakfast. You are going to up against the light so start as early as you possibly can. If you feel good cycle past you end stop to make the next day easier, even build up a buffer at the end - depending on your timeframes. This was a challenge NOT a holiday - the 18 day version would be more pleasant.

These are the actuals - they include wrong turns, diversions, forgot to turn Garmin off on day 2 at a lunch stop (while in the van hunting for foood!) - the realities of the JOGLE... it won't be perfect... however, you won't have diversions because of the commonwealth games for example I didn't predict ;-)

Keep eating - food and drink is so important. I felt ok most of the time on this basis alone. Legs - felt better from day 4, but ached most of the time. Ice bath didn't really work for me.

Thanks B.
