CTC Membership Services
Re: CTC Membership Services
Outsourcing - the modern epidemic. Give the work to a company with a name made up of random vowels and consonants and let the specialists look after the problem. I mean, how hard can it be? Too hard apparently. Pay someone in house.
Re: CTC Membership Services
“CTC Director Kevin Mayne has asked me to post the following message.
I apologise if the wording some of the information on the complaints procedure was ambiguous. To clarify the point made by Karen, every possible complaint we know about is in the complaints report that goes to Council and they are all taken with equal seriousness. The total relating to membership is running at about 300 per year at present from 60,000+ members. Historically it has been higher.
I have also privately given Regulator the information he requested because I happen to know the person behind the handle. I was not aware that he had asked for it, once again can I please ask people to contact me with their details and I will deal with it, I meant what I said on the web page. http://www.ctc.org.uk/DesktopDefault.aspx?TabID=3655 “

I'm pleased that there is recognition that complaints relating to membership are now acknowledged to be higher than a single figure, as was previously alleged. I still think there must be more than 300 members per year who contact Membership Services because there is a problem with magazines not received, missing cards, incorrect cards, payment problems, etc. But if that's what the data shows then I suppose it must be accepted. I'd like to know that somebody on CTC Council has had sight of this data however.
Re: CTC Membership Services
I've just renewed my membership online .... possibly?
OK, it seemed to work BUT in this day and age I find it amazing that it's a "batch process overnight" according to the screen after payment was made (I thought all that batch stuff went away in about 1988!)
- and it was rather odd to enter the membership number and surname (lower-case only?!?!) and then not see anything with my name to be comfortable that they knew it was me - just the option to pay by credit/debit card and "update" phone and e-mail (the lack of current information made "updating" an issue that I didn't know whether I needed to do or not??)
We'll see what happens if/when I get the promised e-mail acknowledgement.

Re: CTC Membership Services
going vaguely off topic.....I do find it odd that one has to use one's surname and CTC membership number to access the member's part of the CTC main website. I don't think that it allows you to get into anything overly secure concerning personal data, but it does make my internal alarm bells ding a bit. Being a committee member of a Member Group I have access to a list of all the people in that group including their names and CTC Membership Numbers - I could log on as any one of these people (possibly up to 200 on the list) were I a malicious person.

Si, what is your concern about having to input your surname and membership number to get into the members's area? It is true that you cannot access any confidential or personal data; I thought it was just so that there is a check on whether you are actually a member? After all it wouldn't be a member's area if anyone could access it. As access to those parts of the site are a member benefit it seems to be an OK system to me.
With regard to the member list you have, I also receive a monthly member list of approx 1200 members, but can't think of a reason (malicious or otherwise) why I would use any of their details to log into the site. As a Membership Registrar I am subject to the same data handling rules all the other Member Group Officers who use this system. The only way to prevent us using the information in an inappropriate fashion would be not to trust us with it at all. Hopefully it won't come to that.
Re: CTC Membership Services
No real concern, it just 'feels' wrong - based upon a life time of having IT security drummed into me, as I'm sure many of us have.
With other clubs , AUK for instance, you get a membership number and a randomly generated password sent to you, that allow you access to the members' section. Of course, in their case this also lets you enter events with pre-filled in forms.
Maybe it goes back to when you had to use the mem num and name to get onto this forum....that, I believe, was a little unwise.
On the other hand, hypothetically speaking, there is nothing to stop someone giving out their mem num to a mate, who then passes it on to others, and pretty soon you could have loads of non-members all logging on with the same ID, down loading all the CTC touring info from the member's area, and never contributing anything to the club for it.

Re: CTC Membership Services
One of the first things that I used to look at in Cycle mag was the Small Ads (private sales), which were removed altogether a few issues ago.
In the mag it states that members now have the opportunity of advertising on the forum in a members section.
Surely, though, the For Sale section on here is open to anyone.
So, where is the benefit to members?

Yes but surely if you're selling something it's better to have more potential buyers than restricting it in some way?
However, as I typed that I realised that the majority of CTC members don't use these forums so you were right.
Re: CTC Membership Services
After reading this thread again I have a question?
When I took out my family membership nearly 2 years ago should I have received any information about my local group and councilor. If so I have not.
I joined and renewed by cheque. If I do not get a letter with the membership card showing correct information I will not pay for a phone call to ask why.
As I put before I do not understand why the CTC is paying for such second rate service.

You should have done - and your local group should have received information about you. Do you know if they did or not? And, if you don't mind my asking, whereabouts do you live? The secretary of the North Birmingham CTC is a breath away.......
Re: CTC Membership Services
When I joined (also 2 years ago) I didn't receive any information about my local group. I presume it's Central London (as I live in N1) but that's only a guess.

If you are in N.Brum (which now includes Sandwell/West Brom - today Birmingham, tomorrow the world!) then we have had problems with getting details of new members (and, indeed, stopping them sending us the details of ex-members). But if we did receive your details then I'm pretty sure John would have tried to contact you - he's very eager on inviting new people to come ride with us. Can't speak for the rest of Brum though.

Yes - that would be central London. And I do know that Nick Bloom, the sec of Central London was going absolutely ballistic about this very thing.
