The membership department person told me that they had records going back to the 1940's but presumably that must be for people with continuous membership. It does seem inequitable that those with a gap in their membership are treated differently.

If you were active with your local DA and took part in events or attended AGMs, then it might be worth contacting them for the old number.

If you needed to record a membership number on your entry or attendance form they may still have them. It's a long shot to say the least but there are DA historians out there who treasure such stuff.

I've already tried that and drawn a blank, there are rides reports and meeting minutes but Sections were obviuosly not as keen on membership lists as HQ are today.Perhaps they were all out cycling.......
