camp site recommendations for Derbyshire
camp site recommendations for Derbyshire
Does anyone have recommendations for simple campsites in Derbyshire, We want a base for doing the Tissinton and High Peak trails trail, a visit to Mam Tor and possibly Blue John Caverns, next week. We just need a pitch for a couple of small tents, fresh water, toilets and some where to wash. We have a van, to travel. but will be using bikes where possible

Rivendale campsite. It is across the Ashbourne road from an access point to the Tissington trail. Nice campsite with excellent facilities. We've stayed there 3 times I think now and it's close to becoming an annual trip there.
You can actually do a route from there up to meet the high peaks and trail then down a bit and cut across again to get back. Or drive to where those trails meet so you can do a shorter circular route if needed.

You're spoilt for choice
The Pudding Room by Carsington Water looks good, Downhill into Ashbourne for the Tissington Trail or uphill onto the High Peak, neither far away. Pub round the corner and a couple of cafes at Carsington Visitors center just down the road. Good local produce shop on site and of course with a name like the pudding room you're not going to have to go far to find cake. I haven't camped there, though I can recommend the cake!

A bit further north there's a couple of campsites at Hulme End, close to the Manifold Trail and about 3 miles from the Tissington Trail. Pub and small shop nearby. Hartington just down the road, which is a lovely village. The first campsite behind the pub is very basic (No shower) but only £4.50 each per night.

The one across the road has all facilities and is a bit dearer

I've stayed at and like both.

The Royal Oak at Hurdlow, at the north end of the Tissington Trail, has a small campsite: fairly basic, but has everything you need (and the pub itself is good, and does giant plates of bangers and mash...). It's right on the trail: http://www.peakpub.co.uk/

If you want simple then this is a brilliant place
http://www.lovecamping.co.uk/campsites/ ... -wood-farm
its on an organic farm, there are no electric hookups (its a campsite!!) and the owners are lovely!
highly recommend it.

Will be interested to hear where you stayed and what you thought of it - always good to hear about good local-ish campsites!

A further recommendation - Barn Farm Camping at Birchover. Convenient for the High Peak and Monsal Trails.
Sherwood CC and Notts CTC.

Waterloo Arms at Biggin. Close to the Tissington Trail and to Hartington. Good basic site, and nice friendly pub.
Callow Top just outside Ashbourne. On the Tissington Trail, walking distance to Ashbourne. Maybe a bit rule-driven and elaborate, but does have on on-site pub which brews its own beer.
And I think there's a basic farm site at Wetton, close to the Manifold trail and Thor's cave. The pub (Royal Oak) is good, but not as good as when it was more basic and had its own campsite.

Re: camp site recommendations for Derbyshire
We stayed at common end farm Swinescoe, A small campsite with simple, but good faciltites, toilets and showers and washing up facilites.
fitted my requirements perfectly.
would certainly recommend them and hoping to go back at some point, to do some of the other trails in the area.
